“Zac was spectacular! Helped us troubleshoot a really difficult electrical issue and found it; this guy is good! They’re on my speed dial now.”

That’s Mark T., from a five-star Google review he left after a panel repair. It’s also about the best description of a repair call we’ve heard. Something in the house stopped working. Somebody came out. They found it.

This guide covers the electrical repairs homeowners across McKinney, Frisco, Prosper, Allen, and Melissa call us about most, what’s usually behind each one, the quick checks worth doing before you pick up the phone, and what happens once a licensed Wellott electrician is standing in your kitchen.

What Happens When You Call Wellott for an Electrical Repair?

You call, email, or book online, and a real person gets you on the schedule, usually within the same week. You get a four-hour arrival window and a call about 30 minutes before we pull up. A licensed electrician traces the problem to its cause, hands you a written, flat price before any work starts, and plenty of repairs are finished on that same visit. For true emergencies, our line answers around the clock and we respond the same day.

Jeff C. put it more simply in his review: “I called after 5:00 on Wednesday to schedule an appointment to have a new quad plug installed. They answered the phone and were able to get someone out by 2:30 the next day, and they finished it in less than an hour.”

Finding the Cause Is the Whole Job

Most electrical problems show up somewhere other than where they start. The outlet that’s dead in the bathroom is often waiting on a reset button in the garage. The breaker that keeps tripping might be perfectly fine, while something plugged into that circuit isn’t. A light that flickers could be the bulb, the fixture, the switch, or the circuit feeding all three.

Replacing parts until the symptom goes away is how one repair turns into three visits. So the first thing we do on every call is trace it.

Zac, one of our service and repair electricians, has been doing residential electrical work for more than seven years, and troubleshooting is his specialty. His team page puts it plainly. What he enjoys most is “identifying the root of a customer’s issue and delivering a solution that fully resolves it.” That’s the standard on every repair call, whoever’s in the truck, and it’s the part customers tend to write about.

Tim’s review is a good example. Zac figured out an AFCI breaker that kept tripping, then installed a thermostat for the AC and heater while he was already at the house. One visit, both handled.

Todd H. had a different kind of day. He’d just bought a house and had painters, a floor crew, and plumbers all working at once. Megan got him scheduled, Zac and Marcos replaced and rewired fixtures, and they tracked down a short along the way. Todd called it “beautiful work at a great price.”

What a Repair Visit Looks Like, Start to Finish

People like knowing what’s coming before a stranger rings the doorbell. Here’s the whole visit.

Booking

There are three ways to get on the schedule. Book online in a couple of minutes, send us an email, or call. Regular hours are Monday through Thursday, 8 to 5, and Friday 8 to 4.

Before we get there

The four-hour arrival window means you aren’t waiting around all day, and we call about 30 minutes out. Every Wellott electrician is licensed, insured, and background-checked.

Finding it

We start with what you’ve noticed. When it started, which rooms, whether a breaker tripped, whether anything changed recently. Then we test at the outlet, the switch, the fixture, and the panel until the cause is in front of us.

The price, then the fix

Before any work begins, you get a written, flat price for the repair. You decide.

Cleanup

We clean up before we leave. Kim H. mentioned that one specifically in her review, along with a crew that “answered all of our questions” and was “very efficient and quick getting the job done.”

A Breaker That Won’t Stay On

A breaker that trips once in a while is doing exactly what it was built to do. One that trips again and again is pointing at something. It usually comes down to one of four things: an overloaded circuit, a failing appliance, a short, or a worn breaker.

What’s usually behind it

Each of those has a different fix. An overloaded circuit might need a second circuit so two big things aren’t sharing one, which is common in kitchens, garages, and home offices that have picked up more plugged-in gear over the years. A failing appliance needs to be found and unplugged. A short needs to be traced to where it is. A worn breaker gets replaced.

What doesn’t fix any of them is a bigger breaker, and we won’t install one to make the tripping stop.

Four reasons your breaker keeps tripping

Breaker box repair near you

This is the job people search for as breaker box repair, and most of the time it really is a repair rather than a new panel. Kim H. called us for a mix of fuse changing, wiring, and panel repair. Mark’s was a panel repair too, the one Zac tracked down.

When the honest answer is that the panel has run out of room, we’ll tell you that too. There’s more on how we make that call a few sections down.

Outlets and Switches That Stopped Working

It could be a loose connection, a worn-out outlet or switch, or a breaker that tripped quietly somewhere else. We find which, and fix it.

Switches, dimmers, and the light that won’t turn off

Switches wear out. So do dimmers, which is one reason a light that buzzes, won’t dim smoothly, or stays on no matter what you do is usually a short visit.

An outlet that won’t hold a plug

If plugs slide right out, or you have to wedge a charger in at an angle to get it to work, the outlet is worn. It’s a quick repair. If several outlets in the house feel that way, we can swap them on the same visit.

Adding, moving, or upgrading outlets

Plenty of outlet and switch calls aren’t repairs at all. They’re an outlet in the wrong spot, a switch on the wrong wall, or a room that needs more places to plug in. Jeff’s quad outlet was exactly that, and it took less than an hour. Brittany M. had outlets and switches handled on the same visit as her panel replacement.

Lights That Flicker or Dim

Flickering lights are on our own short list of reasons to call an electrician, and most of the time the answer is a simple one. It can be a bulb or a fixture connection that’s worked loose, a switch or dimmer that’s wearing out, or a circuit that’s carrying a lot at once.

We check the fixture, the switch, and the circuit, and tell you which one it is before we touch anything. When a fixture is the problem, and it’s due for replacing anyway, LED fixtures and recessed lighting are both regular work for us.

Part of the House Lost Power

When one room, or a string of outlets, suddenly goes quiet, start at the panel. Look for a breaker sitting in that middle position. Push it fully off, then back on. Then check the GFCIs in the kitchen, baths, garage, and outside, since one tripped GFCI can take out outlets in more than one spot.

If the breaker trips right back off, or nothing you reset brings the power back, give us a call. The cause is often a loose connection somewhere along the run.

If the whole house is dark and your neighbors have power, or the panel itself seems dead, that’s one we treat as urgent. More on that below.

Warm Outlets, Discolored Plates, and Older Two-Prong Outlets

An outlet or switch plate that feels warm, or has turned brown around the edges, is worth having us look at soon. So are older two-prong outlets without a ground. Neither usually means a big job. More often it’s a worn device or a connection that needs to be redone, and updating it is a short visit.

A burning smell is different. That’s one we’ll come out for around the clock.

Ceiling Fans and Outdoor Lighting

Ceiling fans

A fan that wobbles is usually a mounting problem. A fan that hums or won’t change speeds is usually the fan or its switch. Either way, it’s a short repair. When a fan needs replacing, we mount the new one to something built to carry the weight, which is what keeps it running smoothly and quietly for years. We install and replace fans indoors and on covered patios.

Outdoor outlets and lighting

Landscape and outdoor lighting that stops working usually comes down to a fixture, a connection, or the timer or switch that runs it. We’ll track it down and get it back on.

Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Detectors

We test, replace, hardwire, and interconnect smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, so when one sounds, they all do, and you hear it from the far end of the house. It’s an easy thing to add to any repair visit.

Just Bought a House? A Few Things Worth Checking

The first few months in a new place are when most people find out what the previous owner left behind. A fixture that never worked. An outlet that’s dead for no clear reason. A panel with labels nobody can read.

A few things worth a look early on:

  • The panel labels. If circuits aren’t labeled clearly, that’s worth fixing on its own, so the next time you need to shut something off, you find it on the first try.
  • Every GFCI. Press test, then reset, in the kitchen, baths, garage, laundry, and outside, and you’ll learn which ones control which outlets.
  • The dates on the back of the smoke and carbon monoxide detectors.
  • Any two-prong outlets, warm plates, or lights that flicker.

If a handful of small things turn up, put them on one visit. We’ll work down the list with a written price before we start. And if you’d rather have someone go through the whole house and tell you what’s fine, what’s worth watching, and what’s worth doing, that’s our whole-home electrical safety inspection.

Breaker Box Repair or Panel Replacement?

This is the question behind a lot of calls, and the most common answer is that you don’t need a new panel yet.

We come out, add up what your house is set up to run, and compare it against what your panel can carry. If there’s room and the problem is a breaker or a connection, we repair it, and there’s no panel to sell you.

When a breaker box needs repair or replacement

When a panel replacement or upgrade makes sense

Sometimes the panel really has run out of room, or it can’t be repaired. That tends to come up when a house is adding something big, like an EV charger, a standby generator, a hot tub, or a kitchen remodel, all asking the same panel for more.

How it should feel either way

Brittany M. had her panel replaced by Marcos and Zack, and she wrote that there was “ZERO upselling or additional fees or charges” and that, as a woman, she felt “100% comfortable the entire time.” Repair or replace, that’s the standard.

When the House Is Full

If a breaker trips every time the kitchen is running full, a second circuit is often all it takes. If the outdoor lights live on extension cords and a prayer, a circuit of their own with weatherproof outlets where the lights actually go means everything just plugs in every year after.

Book it a few weeks before the guests arrive, and it’s one less thing on the list.

Emergency and After-Hours Electrical Repair

Our line answers around the clock for true electrical emergencies, like a burning smell, sparking outlets, or a dead panel, and emergencies get a same-day response.

If you’re searching for an emergency electrician in McKinney, TX, or a 24-hour electrician near you in Frisco, Prosper, Allen, or Melissa, that’s what this line is for. A real person picks up, even after hours.

Not sure whether it counts? A single dead outlet, a light that flickers now and then, or a breaker that trips once and holds can usually wait for a regular appointment. If you’re still unsure, call, and we’ll help you sort it out.

Everything we handle after hours, and how it works, is on our emergency service page.

What to Have Ready When You Call

You don’t need to diagnose anything. A few details just help us show up ready.

  • What stopped working, and roughly when it started
  • Which rooms or outlets are affected
  • Whether a breaker tripped or a GFCI won’t reset
  • Anything that changed recently, like a new appliance or a remodel
  • A photo of the panel or the problem, if it’s easy to grab

If something smells like it’s burning, skip the list and call.

Repairs for Businesses, Property Managers, and Builders

Residential, commercial, and new-build work are all part of what we do. For a business owner or property manager looking for an electrical contractor in McKinney, TX, that means one number to call when something on the job or at the shop stops working.

Logan G. is one of them: “Professional, quick response time, reasonable pricing, and top-level customer service. We use them with our business to solve problems that occur on our jobs catering to consumers. They have helped my team on several occasions and will continue to use them again.”

While We’re There: Upgrades Worth Pairing With a Repair

A repair visit is a good time to handle the other thing on your list, since we’re already at the house and already know your panel.

EV and Tesla charger installation

A Level 2 charger runs on a 240-volt circuit of its own and turns overnight charging into a few hours. We check the panel first, mount the charger where you actually park, and wire it as a NEMA 14-50 outlet or hardwired- your call. Tesla, Ford, Rivian, Chevy, and most other brands. We test it charging before we leave.

Whole-house surge protection

A power strip protects whatever’s plugged into it. A whole-home surge protector at the panel covers every device in the house at the point where power comes in. It pairs well with any panel repair, since we’re already working there.

Generac generator installation

We’re a factory-authorized Generac dealer, so sizing, installation, and service all happen with one company. A standby generator sits outside on a pad, runs on natural gas or propane, and takes over within seconds when the power goes out, whether or not anyone’s home. One price covers the sizing consult, slab prep coordination, transfer switch, setting the unit, a startup test with you watching, and the city permit and final inspection. After that, an annual service plan keeps it ready.

The All Access Pass

All Access Pass members get a whole-home electrical inspection every year, discounted diagnostic fees on every visit, and front-of-the-line scheduling when they need us fast. For anyone who likes having the electrician already lined up, it’s the easy version of that. Ask about it on any visit.
